New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) has just released the new requirements for all students applying for tertiary education in New Zealand. South Pacific students are now required to undertake IELTS in order to apply for courses in New Zealand. What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. In Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, and other South Pacific Countries, the test is being held usually once a month. Students who are planning to study in Australia or New Zealand, always need to choose an Academic Type of test.
What score is required for tertiary education?
The score you need to obtain depends on the program you will be applying for. For most diploma programmes you need to achieve score 5.5 which is described as “modest user”. Bachelor programmes require candidates to pass IELTS with the result of minimum 6. Some other programmes like Nursing or other health-related courses accept applicants with score above 7 only.
Programme Level and required IELTS outcome:
Most institutes accept test scores from these three English competency testing systems:
- IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) OR
- TOEFL (the Test of English as a Foreign Language) OR
- PTE Academic (the Pearson Test of English Academic).
Many students struggle with achieving the required ILETS score. However, most of the educational institutes in Australia and New Zealand offer English preparation course. The English course will commence before your desired programme and it will help you to improve your language skills.
